Twenty-two of forty-nine. Lens, visor, veil, mask, leaf — never paint.

Movement four · the word for the thing

Dulia

The veneration owed to an image, as against the worship owed to God.

Almost nobody knows the word. Every one of these pictures is asking for it. And in twenty-two of the forty-nine the eyes are already gone. Lens, visor, veil, mask, leaf. Never paint — in these the eyes are gone. Iconoclasts always went for the eyes first, because the gaze is what makes an icon work. This series brings its own iconoclasm with it: the veneration and the destruction standing in the same picture.

An image made to be worshipped, and there is no one behind it.

Forty-nine frames · twenty-two with the eyes taken · none of them anywhere
